Richard J. Phipps was born on March 15, 1934, in Porterville, California. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family and close friends on February 5, 2010.
Richard enjoyed enriching the lives of others and was truly in his element in Greenville, South Carolina. Golf and work were Richard's passions. He loved traveling and especially enjoyed golf trips with good friends. He was still having fun working at 75 and was always a valuable contributor, mentor, and motivator to everyone.
When Richard moved to Greenville in 1985, he brought 30+ years of experience in petroleum marketing with him from Standard Oil of California. He founded a second career with a small hopeful company of fifteen gasoline stores. Richard's steady hand has been critical to The Spinx Company, growing to over 125 outlets today. In his professional life Richard was respected by his peers, revered by his co-workers and had a positive impact on everyone he touched.
Richard is survived by his best friend and wife, Donna; his children, Don Phipps, Kathy Southern and Cheri Scott, along with their spouses, Mary, Bob and Rob; granddaughters, Michele Bailey and Kelsey Pena, and great-grandson, Rolan. Additional California family includes Harland and Vi Phipps, Bob and Roz Phipps, Velma and Gregg Trost, and Darlene and Bill Goucher; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Bertha Phipps.
He will be missed by many dear friends, family members and co-workers.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held on Sunday, February 7, 2010, from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m., with remembrances at 3:30 p.m., at Thornblade Club. Visitation in Porterville, CA will be Thursday, February 11, 2010, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Whitehurst Lloyd Funeral Home. Final Service and burial will be Friday, February 12, 2010 at Hillcrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cancer Center of the Carolinas, 3 Butternut Drive, Suite B, Greenville, SC 29605, where Richard made good friends during his treatment.
