David Michael Bridges, former Greenville City Chief of Police, died Thursday, February 4, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his family. Born on April 21, 1947, in Ware Shoals, SC, he was the son of the late Honorable Calvin L. and Imogene Gary Bridges. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Bonnie Greene Bridges of Greer. He is also survived by his daughter, Mylissa Vickery, husband, Dane and granddaughters, Ashley and Amanda of Simpsonville; his brother, Roger Bridges and his wife, Maxine of Woodruff; his uncle, Charles Bridges and his wife, Aurelia of Simpsonville; his aunts, Pauline Bridges Schiffley of Charlotte, NC, and Jewell Holliday and her husband, Roy of Rome, GA. Chief Bridges joined the Greenville City Police Department in 1968, rising through the ranks to become Chief in September 1987. He retired in July 2000, the longest serving Chief in the city's history. During this long career, he received numerous awards, including the J.P. Strom Award for excellence and the William W. Wilkins, Jr. Award for excellence in law enforcement. He served in the South Carolina Air National Guard and later was a member of the Governor's Task Force for the Guard and Reserve. He was a graduate of the 110th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. His devotion to law enforcement did not end with his retirement. He said, "I will always be a police officer at heart." Chief Bridges was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He served the community on numerous boards including the Phyllis Wheatley Center, and he was a past member of the Rotary Club. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to all doctors, nurses, and therapists who treated Chief Bridges with compassion over this past year. They are especially grateful to the nurses and staff of Interim Healthcare and Hospice. Funeral services will be held at Pendleton Street Baptist Church on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., with the Reverend Gilbert Eliason officiating. Entombment will follow at Graceland East Cemetery. The family received friends at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, on Saturday, February 6, 2010. The family is at the Bridges' home.
